Will King, Architect AIBC, MRAIC, LEED AP

Will is a licensed architect with 15 years experience in the field. He and his family live, work and play on the sunny shores of Victoria, BC on Vancouver Island. Aside from his work with Waymark Architecture, he is also the Chair of the Architectural Conservation Committee and Board Member of the Victoria Civic Heritage Trust.

Will became involved with the Canada Green Building Council early in his career, becoming a LEED Accredited Professional in 2006 during the first generation of the certification program. This leadership was essential to improve the environmental effects of the building industry, but more could be done and Will soon moved on to find new peaks with the Living Building Institute. The Institute’s objectives were to expand beyond the highest level of LEED by achieving net zero buildings with respect to energy and water consumption while adding a value for beauty and health. Will had been involved with some of the first Living Building designs in the pacific northwest.

As architects began to produce greater levels of ‘sustainable’ building it became clear that pushing ahead in small increments was just becoming too expensive and less effective with each new percentage point gained. A completely new approach to the way people think, they way we act and the way we build is needed to reach beyond mere efficiency and into a world where buildings and human habitation helps mend the environment we’re entangled with, and so dependent on. The creation of Waymark Architecture was the next step toward that goal.
